Church of Santa Maria and Byzantine Sarcophagus - Sinagra

Ancient ruin located in the Mezzagosto district, the Church of Santa Maria seems to have been built in the early Christian period. Inside it is still possible to appreciate a sandstone sarcophagus, with a regular plant and a sloping lid, on whose front a sequence of circles is wisely carved containing the symbols of the four evangelists and the Mystic Lamb: the five medallions are intertwined with vegetables decorated with a stylized rosette. The sarcophagus is an important testimony of Byzantine art and culture in these places. Tradition has it that during the periods of drought, the remains preserved in the sarcophagus placed on the ground were brought back to favor the rain.
