The Mercadante quarries

The place called Cave del mercadante is characterized by the presence of large discs made of sandstone that emerge from the water in an area of coast that today is incorporated into the modern marina. The diameter of the grooves that generate these large stone discs varies from one to two meters and goes deep for about ten centimeters. The function of these discs remains unknown today and it is excluded, despite the suggestion of the forms, that these could have been extraction of millstones for the mills.
