Castle of Montalbano Elicona

Castle This Castle was originally a fortress and was later transformed into a real Royal Palace. The Swabian-Aragonese Castle that overlooks the city center is in fact the result of numerous and successive constructions that have stratified over the centuries by the Byzantines, Arabs, Swabians and Normans.

It was also the summer residence chosen by King Frederick II of Aragon, who in the early 1300s transformed it into a real Royal Residence, full of decorations, architectural elements and treasures that make the Castle unique in the its kind. It is thanks to the works wanted by the Aragonese King, in fact, that the Montalbano Elicona Castle can now boast of being among the most impressive and, at the same time, elegant works of the Sicilian Middle Ages.

Among the most valuable works, you will be enchanted by the Royal Chapel of the Byzantine era, an extraordinary testimony of the past that has come to us in all its splendor.

You will also be happy to know that the Castle, in addition to being fully usable with all its treasures, also offers, in a dedicated wing, a Museum of White Weapons and a Museum of Ancient Musical Instruments, particularly interesting if you want to dive completely in the atmosphere of the ancient medieval courts.
