Mother Church Santa Maria - Piraino

The Mother Church (S. Maria) is located in the center of the village. The current appearance dates back to 1585 as reported on an arch inside. The layout is a Latin cross plan to which a nave was added in 700. The church stands on the remains of a smaller church, documented from the 18th century. Inside there are various works, silver and sacred furnishings. There are several paintings such as: S. Rosalia by Rosalia Novelli (1960-1963); S. Nicola di Bari (XV century), S. Francesco di Paola (XVI century), S. Orsola (1618) by Francesco Ferlito. Among the sculptures: the Holy Family (XVIII century) a wooden cross with symbols (XVI century), the reliquary urn of S. Bruna placed behind a XVII gate commissioned by Duke Vincenzo Denti and the organ of Annibale lo Bianco . Through a trapdoor in the floor, you can access the catacombs built by the Arc. Scalenza in 1771, where the mummies of the archpriests are exposed.
