Badia

Located near a cliff at the foot of the historic center, adjacent to the road that reaches the town entrance and next to a water source, the Badia church dating back to 1101 is the oldest religious building in all of Piraino. It was granted by Count Roger to the abbot of the lands of Raccuja. The church, with a single nave culminating in a semicircular apse, was closed for worship for many years, but after careful restoration and conservation works, it was returned to the community on August 11, 2017. From the restoration works, they came to the light along the internal walls and along the apse of the important Byzantine frescoes depicting, among others, the Christ Pantocrator and a Madonna and Child. Some of these frescoes, to be safeguarded, have been detached to be kept inside the church of the Madonna del Rosario.
