Church of San Nicolò di Bari - Tortorici

The existence of the Church of San Nicolò di Bari is documented even before 1400 and for this reason it is considered the oldest place of worship in Tortorici. The Greek Orthodox rite was practiced in this church until 1502. Destroyed by the devastating flood of 1682, it was rebuilt on the same site, albeit with a reduced size and was finished on the outside in the early 1800s. In the main altar the relics of San Nicolò di Bari, Greek Bishop of Myra. In addition to the wooden ceiling and the paintings of the painter Giuseppe Tomasi, you can also admire a 17th century painting depicting Santa Domenica.
