Church of Santa Croce - Castell'Umberto

The Church of Santa Croce, which stands in Castanìa, the oldest place in the town of Castell'Umberto, for years represented the church that served the neighboring districts. When the town moved to its current site, it performed the functions of a mother church until the completion of the work of the Church of Maria SS. Assunta, current Matrix. Inside there is a wooden crucifix of the seventeenth century, a marble statue of the Madonna, placed on a polygonal base in the center of which there is a bas-relief, a picture of the Annunciation, on the sides the Apostles Peter and Paul and at the ends, the written MDCLP and the date 1521. According to legend, the hill on which the small church stands bears the name of Santa Croce, because in that place, where in the past there was a pagan temple, a wooden cross was raised, towards which the sailors they looked and prayed.
